ARTWORK ID: 7026
CATEGORY: Works on Paper
ARTIST STATEMENT:
This piece captures and expresses the raw and rugged beauty of Pippingarra Station through a lens that is both intimate and surreal. As a Pilbara-based artist who has lived and worked in this region, I am deeply connected to its stark contrasts and elemental forces. The landscape, rendered in vibrant pastels on delicate bone paper, draws from a photograph I took during a day-long 4WD adventure with friends near Port Hedland.
The painting depicts a man-made gorge, a striking reminder of the region's industrial imprint amidst natural grandeur. The use of hyper-colour - especially the stark turquoise blue waters against the rich red and pink of iron-laden soil - speaks to the Pilbara's enduring spirit and its complex relationship with mining. This contrast highlights a moment frozen between nature and human intervention, inviting the viewer to explore the intersection where vibrant life meets harsh reality.
Through bold colours and textured strokes, *Echoes of Pippingarra* celebrates the enigmatic beauty of this land, embracing its contradictions with a surprisingly poetic vibrancy. It is an homage to the environment that challenges and inspires those who call the Pilbara home.
