ARTWORK ID: 7004
CATEGORY: Works on Paper
ARTIST STATEMENT:
This drawing explores the contrast between the dense, enclosed space of Hamersley Gorge and the vast openness of the surrounding landscape. The ancient rock formations, shaped by erosion over time, are set against a wide expanse of land and sky, creating a tension between the gorge's protective, sheltering presence and the sense of endless space beyond it. That same contrast appears in the drawing's composition. Empty areas evoke the solid, time-worn rock of the gorge, while a tight, dense grid suggests the immensity of the open landscape. This reversal shifts the sense of scale, balancing fullness and emptiness, while the empty space also suggests light and hints at an even greater expanse beyond what is visible.
