Judge’s comments:

The wonder of the elaborate lengths that an octopus will go to in order to camouflage itself is beautifully articulated in this highly refined watercolour. This work also alerts us to the important benefits of looking closely underwater in order to understand interrelationships between those who spend their time moving about amongst the coral reefs.

ARTWORK ID: 7003

CATEGORY: Works on Paper

ARTIST STATEMENT:

With skin like a living canvas, the octopus morphs and vanishes into the reef with effortless grace. Their fluid bodies move like the water they inhabit. Becoming phantoms in plain sight, as if a living, breathing part of the reef itself.

Here, you'll find seven octopuses hidden. Like diving on a reef, nothing reveals itself all at once. When you remain still, the world slowly unfolds around you. Shapes appear. Movement catches your eye. What once felt static begins to breathe. The longer you look, the more you see.

This piece is an ode to the brilliance of marine camouflage, and an invitation to slow down and truly take in what is already there.

MEDIUM: Watercolour on paper

ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 790mm x 600mm

WEIGHT (approx): 5kg

ARTIST LOCATION: ROCKINGHAM, WA
