7001, Scarlet Banksia with Honey Possum, Merry Robertson
ARTWORK ID: 7001
CATEGORY: Works on Paper
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I produce my artwork to give a voice to our precious flora and fauna.
This linocut print, inspired by a photo by Nathan Watson, shows a honey possum suspended between two Scarlet Banksia. Though widely occurring near Albany WA, the banksia is highly sensitive to dieback and large populations have succumbed to the disease. It is also threatened by bushfire and land clearing.
The tiny honey possum, a protected species in Australia, is a vital pollinator for the banksia, keeping it thriving in the face of adversity.
The lino plate takes over 30 hours to carve with the final hand colouring applied with inks which capture the brilliant hues of the Scarlet Banksia.
MEDIUM: Linocut print, ink
ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 420mm x 520mm
WEIGHT (approx): 1.5kg
ARTIST LOCATION: LITTLE GROVE, WA
ARTWORK ID: 7001
CATEGORY: Works on Paper
