6002, Glassy Eyed, Sarah Grange

$6,500.00

ARTWORK ID: 6002

CATEGORY: Portraits (a model release form from the subject must be supplied)

ARTIST STATEMENT:

This self-portrait reflects my experience of moving to Western Australia and how it has shaped my perspective. It explores identity, change, and the way we see ourselves through different lenses. The objects in the painting-an olive oil bottle, a teddy-shaped jar, a new plant, and a Banksia baxteri-each hold meaning in this transition.

The olive oil bottle represents routine and nourishment-something constant and familiar, no matter where I am. The teddy-shaped jar is a reminder of comfort and nostalgia, small connections to the past that we carry with us. The new plant reflects growth and change, the process of putting down roots in a new place. The Banksia baxteri, a native Australian flower, represents the unfamiliar-both beautiful and unpredictable. It is something I wouldn't have encountered before moving here, much like many aspects of this new chapter in my life.

The glass distorts and reframes my face, much like how relocation shifts self-perception. Some things remain familiar, while others take on new shapes. This piece captures that adjustment-finding a sense of self in a different environment and seeing things from a new angle.

MEDIUM: Oil

ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 760mm x 600mm

WEIGHT (approx): 4kg

ARTIST LOCATION: SOUTH PERTH, WA
