ARTWORK ID: 5065
CATEGORY: Pilbara Landscape
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Bigali Hanlon is an Yinjibarndi Elder living on Ngarluma Country in Ieramagadu. Stolen from her family at the age of 6 from Mulga Downs Station in 1946 with her younger brother, her journey of reconnection has been long and challenging at times. But with support from Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Elders, nieces and nephews, her land-based arts and crafts practice is developed through cultural reciprocity and respect for Country.
After many years of working in various mediums and artforms, Bigali has recently found her new passion.
She carefully collects, crushes and catalogues colours of the country, patiently mixing and creating many new shades and tones of natural ochre. This land-based practice is part of Bigali's journey of healing and re-connection to Country and culture.
The tension between the curves and shapes of different coloured ochres is reminiscent of Ngurra during the hot season before a big rain. The wind swirls red dust, rocks bake in the sun and the riverbeds are dry. The country is crying for rain.
