ARTIST STATEMENT:
This work is part of my "Clouds for Mountains" series, inspired by a storm front moving across the Cheela Plains/Beasley River and confining me to camp.
"The roads are closed - you cannot leave by car or foot... We are marooned by water and weather and I am content... this place is enough. Roads closed is a pause - where you have to stop and just be here... I do not feel contained - there is space all around and instead it feels like I can just wander and breathe and it is enough..."
Made in oil and cold wax on panel, the work is built through layered surfaces of addition and removal. I inscribe words directly into the wax, then scratch and disrupt them, allowing language to surface and disappear within the paint. The textural nature of the layers relate to the mud and rock and rough tracks of the landscape. The heavy clouds promise more rain, so precious to the Pilbara.
