5030, Man And Goat, Josephine Johnson
ARTWORK ID: 5030
CATEGORY: Pilbara Landscape
ARTIST STATEMENT:
In this work a sole figure wanders the landscape seeking guidance from a goat. GOAT in modern slang stands for Greatest of All Time whereas in ancient time the goat was symbolic of power, destruction and devilish acts. Here a man and a goat survey a land laden with riches from high up on the Hamersley Range; an imagining of a time before the changes we see today. The copper foil indicates the riches and colours of the Pilbara, and the crosshatching the envisioning of man's impact. This artwork combines reflections I had travelling through the Pilbara where I was struck by the ancient history, the stories of colonisation, the striking beauty of the landscape, the evident impacts of industry and traffic criss-crossing the land, and of course those comical, naughty and devastating goats.
MEDIUM: Oil paint and copper foil on board
ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 300mm x 230mm
WEIGHT (approx): 0.5kg
