ARTWORK ID: 4005

CATEGORY: Painting by Pilbara Indigenous Artist

ARTIST STATEMENT:

This painting is inspired by a recent camp I had on Country along the Robe River. Sitting there at night beside a waterhole, I was drawn to the moon reflecting on the surface of the water and the patterns the moon and stars made as they slowly moved across it.

As I sat quietly watching the water, I found myself thinking about my old people and the stories they shared with me about the importance of water, how we are connected to it, and its spiritual significance. My thoughts travelled further back to their parents and grandparents who walked and lived on this land long before them, telling those same stories and perhaps sitting at this very spot. In that moment, I felt a deep sense of connection and belonging to Country.

Together, these elements capture the quiet movement of the night sky, the stillness of Country, and the deep reflection that comes when sitting alone on land that has held my people for countless generations.
