This artwork represents Nyalanyalagun (Dampier Creek) in Rubibi (Broome). The creek is part of Country that has long been cared for by the Yawuru people, whose deep cultural connections to land and water continue today.
Flowing through mangroves and tidal flats before meeting the turquoise waters of Roebuck Bay, Dampier Creek is a place of movement, nourishment, and story. The patterns and colours in this painting reflect the shifting tides, winding waterways, and living ecosystems of the mangroves - home to fish, crabs, birds, and other coastal life that sustain the land and its people.
Through layered forms and flowing lines, the artwork captures both the physical landscape and the cultural significance of the creek as part of living Country. It acknowledges the enduring relationship between people, water, and place, and honours the knowledge passed down through generations about caring for this environment.
