ARTWORK ID: 3099
CATEGORY: Open Theme
ARTIST STATEMENT:
As a graphic designer and emerging artist, I find inspiration in the unexpected parallels between the natural world and personal experience. I like to think my work reflects these parallels, exploring themes of identity, empathy, adaptation, and resilience.
This piece titled Tawny, is a dry point monoprint on archival paper, an etching of a Tawny Frogmouth that holds deep personal significance. It was inspired by a remarkable encounter during my late grandmother's wake-a tawny frogmouth visited us seemingly as a final symbolic gesture from a woman who lived with grace and spirit for 101 years.
A poignant, almost surreal, unexpected moment that has stayed with me, making me wonder if it was her final way of connecting us. Despite her lifelong aversion to frogs, this bird's presence felt fitting and symbolic, perhaps a playful reminder of her enduring presence and the curious ways in which nature communicates.
Known for its incredible camouflaging abilities, the native Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) blends seamlessly into its environment, a skill I have always deeply admired but never really given much thought as to why.
Navigating various aspects of life, I have often found myself mirroring the tawny's camouflage skills, blending in, adapting to my surroundings. Here I celebrate the visual beauty, the slow embrace of one's true self, and learning to stand out when it truly matters. While still honoring the need to adapt, conceal, and survive in a world that has often asked us to hide.
Each etched line is a tribute-to my grandmother's life, to the stories she told, her acceptance and to the unexpected ways she continues to inspire me.
