The Horseman and Brumby

Drawing Inspiration from Pilbara Rodeo

The horseman and brumby were copied from a photo taken at a Pilbara rodeo and supplied by photographer Hayley Ewing. The image captures a powerful moment, freezing the dynamic interplay between man and beast in an arena of red dust and raw energy.

My painting is a testament to the dramatic beauty of the rodeo, where the untamed spirit of the brumby is met by the skill and resilience of the horseman. The horse kicks up a red dust cloud as he writhes and bucks, but amidst this chaos, the expert horseman maintains his balance and seat in the saddle.

This juxtaposition of movement and stability, wildness and control, is what makes the scene so enthralling.

My painting not only captures the physicality of the rodeo but also tells a deeper story of the bond between the rider and his horse. It is a dance of trust and understanding, where the horseman's expertise ensures that he remains unyielding, even as the brumby fights with all his might.

The red dust, a signature of the Pilbara landscape, adds a layer of authenticity and intensity to the scene, making it a vivid representation of the Australian outback.

The painting, with its dramatic flair and attention to detail, brings the viewer into the heart of the action, allowing them to feel the tension and excitement of the rodeo. It is a snapshot of resilience, courage, and the unbreakable connection between human and animal. In the end, I feel the painting serves as a reminder of the rodeo's enduring appeal and the timeless challenge it presents to those who dare to participate. It captures a fleeting moment that speaks volumes about the spirit of the horseman and the wild heart of the brumby.
