ARTWORK ID: 3018
CATEGORY: Open Theme
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Car Dumper 1 (CD1C) was commissioned at Cape Lambert in 1972 and decommissioned in 2024, with the final piece of the machine - the barrel - being removed on 12 December 2025.
For 52 years, CD1C stood as a constant on the coastline, its rhythm shaping the lives and routines of generations who worked beside it. Over its lifetime, CD1C tipped approximately 1.2 billion tonnes of iron ore, processing countless J‑fleet cars that collectively travelled more than 30 million kilometres.
More than a machine, CD1C became part of the identity of Cape Lambert - a familiar silhouette against the horizon and a trusted workhorse that carried the weight of an industry.
This piece captures the end of an era. It reflects not only the machine's long service, but the people behind it: the maintainers, operators, and problem‑solvers who kept her alive shift after shift.
To those who kept her running with blood, sweat and tears, this work stands as a tribute to their craft, their grit, and the legacy they leave behind.
