ARTIST STATEMENT:
Global fish stocks face dual threats from existential climate change and our drive to harvest ocean resources. "Rebel", the subject of my artwork, symbolises resilience and a determination to survive. To imply this, he is resplendent in tartan, diversely adopted as insignias of rebellion, pride and defiance by Scottish clans, rebellious teenagers and even punk musicians of the 1970s. I also intended "Rebel" to reflect hope for a turning environmental tide. In parallel with the fish's stubborn instinct to survive, there are growing initiatives to care for the marine environment, for the species' sake, not just our own.
