ARTIST STATEMENT:
The gloriously named Tasselled (or Prickly) Leatherjacket fish is widespread through the Indian Ocean tropics. It is a shy, camouflaged and nocturnal fish, but it is a survivor and I was reminded of the lyrics from "Leather & Lace" (a song by Stevie Nicks and Don Henley): "I have my own life, And I am stronger than you know". So I have used mixed media and a vibrant palette to portray this Leatherjacket as a brave and colourful character, and to remind us that we humans have a deep responsibility to protect and preserve all life in our oceans.
