ARTIST STATEMENT:
It is about the loneliness and longing experiences by the men and boys taken from their families, land and culture to be interned at Rottnest Island Prison. It is also a story about the enduring connection between men, women, Country and kin.
The warrior, possibly Yindjibarndi, was probably transported from Roebourne Prison to Rottnest Island Prison in the 1880's, hundreds of kilometres from home. He is reminded of his Country and kin by the plants and animals of Wadjemup. The colours of the Wadjemup daisy - kep Koorliny mart - remind him of the mulla mulla which grow prolifically across the Pilbara. The strong and graceful jiruna (pelican), may be related to him. The plants and animals surround him - supporting his spiritual journey home.
This is a collaboration between Yindjibarndi artist Michelle Broun and her partner Noongar artist Mark Howett.
