ARTWORK ID: 2030

CATEGORY: North West Flora and Fauna

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Depicting plants that grow wild in Pilbara sands, this pen and ink illustration on plywood overlaps species often found clinging to hillsides, along dusty tracks and across open plains enduring heat, poor soils, and dry country. The background is made from hand-processed pigments mixed with gum arabic and honey, incorporating cuttlefish and warmer tones ethically sourced from Pilbara rocks and sand. The custom frame formed from a recycled metal wine barrel ring, contributes both to its physical presence and its focus on reuse and material history. Holding a sense of place through observation, drawing, gathering and layering becomes a way of slowing down, acknowledging resilience, adaptation and transformation throughout the length of the process.

MEDIUM: Ink and Earth Pigments

ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 600mm x 600mm

WEIGHT (approx): 2.3kg
