ARTWORK ID: 2027

CATEGORY: North West Flora and Fauna

ARTIST STATEMENT:

This watercolour collage on cotton paper explores material and conceptual unity through the use of 100% cotton elements. Instead of adhesive, cotton thread is used to stitch the collage together, reinforcing a physical and symbolic connection between surface and structure.

Working in a limited palette of primarily cerulean blue, French ultramarine, and Mayan orange with touches of cadmium red, the piece balances cool and warm forces - blue as energy, movement, and atmosphere; orange as earth, mineral, and heat.

Although non-representational, the work draws on the landscape and resource-rich identity of the Pilbara. There is no defined sky or ground; instead, colour and form interact to suggest the meeting of electric, almost elemental energy with the iron-rich terrain. The blue operates as both water and force - an abstract life-giving presence resulting in recognisable desert peas - while the red orange reflects the density and material richness of the land.

MEDIUM: Watercolour, collage, cotton paper, cotton thread

ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 415mm x 540mm

WEIGHT (approx): 4kg
