2022, Arid Bloom, Kate Turner
ARTWORK ID: 2022
CATEGORY: North West Flora and Fauna
ARTIST STATEMENT:
This is my expression of the softness that the Mulla Mulla bloom brings to the arid landscape of the Pilbara. I used the background colours to represent the burnt desert terrain where the sun feels like it has consumed all the noise and the land is left in silence. When the Mulla Mulla is in bloom, the desert silence is broken with whispers of lilac splashed all over the land. Her flowers appear soft and feathery and yet they are spiky and sturdy, suggesting resilience despite a delicate appearance. The female face hidden amongst the bloom, represents resilience. She stares at you with scars on her face and through a veiled gaze. Through this piece, I highlight the beauty and strength the Mulla Mulla brings to the Pilbara.
