ARTIST STATEMENT:
I find the name for male swimmers quite playful, describing the boys of these quick and beautifully coloured crabs.
Western Australian blue swimmer crabs are most commonly found in sheltered coastal environments, such as estuaries and inshore marine waters, ranging from Nickol Bay near Karratha to Albany in the south.
I drew inspiration from Asian ink painting traditions and used a tight composition to convey both abundance and vulnerability.
