Applications open for 2026 Cossack Art Awards Artist in Residence program

Applications for the prestigious 2026 Cossack Art Awards Artist in Residence program will open on 13 October.

Open to artists across Australia, this $20,000 program, facilitated by the City of Karratha with Principal Partner Rio Tinto, offers one artist the unique opportunity to live and work in the historic town of Cossack for four weeks from 13 July to 10 August 2026.

The residency provides time, space, and resources for the artist to develop a new body of work while engaging the local community through expert-led workshops and events.

The successful applicant will be provided with historic accommodation, studio space, travel, and art supplies during their residency.

2025 Artist in Residence Monique Ross said it was a gift to spend time in a landscape so different from the one she calls home.

“Cossack holds stories stretching back tens of thousands of years, and it was a privilege to immerse myself in a place so rich with history and meaning. My time as the 2025 Artist in Residence was nothing short of extraordinary,” Ms Ross said.

“The residency offered more than just time to make — it shifted something in me as an artist. To be so deeply immersed in landscape, community, and practice expanded the way I think about weaving and strengthened my relationship to process and place.

“It has given me a newfound sense of confidence in myself, and inspired me to pursue an immersive solo exhibition. I know this experience will continue to ripple through my work for years to come.”

The Artist in Residence is hosted each year, and a range of Public Programs are presented to generate interest in the visual arts and craft in our region, providing skills development opportunities for local artists, art enthusiasts and visitors.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said the Artist in Residence program was a unique opportunity to inspire both the visiting artist and the local community.

“The Cossack Art Awards Artist in Residence program provides artists with an extraordinary chance to immerse themselves in the Pilbara’s rugged landscapes and rich cultural heritage while sharing their skills with our community,” Cr Scott said.

“I encourage artists from across Australia to apply and be part of this iconic program, which not only supports the development of their own practice but also inspires creativity and connection across our region.”

Applications for the 2026 residency close at 5pm on Monday 1 December 2025.
