In this reflective workshop, artists are invited to explore the beauty and meaning hidden within everyday objects. Sacred Ordinary: The Art of Still Life invites participants to slow down, observe deeply, and transform simple arrangements into thoughtful works of art.
Still life has long been a beloved subject in the history of painting and drawing, from the luminous studies of fruit and flowers by the Dutch masters to the expressive interpretations of modern artists. In this workshop, we will look beyond technique to consider how ordinary objects can hold memory, symbolism, and personal meaning.
Working with carefully arranged studio objects, such as florals, vessels, fruit, and natural elements, participants will learn how to compose a compelling still life while exploring principles of light, shadow, balance, and colour harmony. The session will also introduce strategies for seeing like an artist: noticing subtle tonal shifts, the rhythm of shapes, and the poetry found in everyday materials.
Artists of all experience levels are welcome.
Guided by professional local artist, Katherine Rose Tawse, in an intimate studio setting, participants will be encouraged to experiment, reflect, and respond personally to the objects before them. By the end of the session, each artist will leave with a completed still life study and a renewed appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us daily.
Sometimes the most profound subjects are the simplest ones; the cup on a table, a single flower, a bowl of fruit. In still life, the ordinary becomes sacred.
