1006, Where's Mum?, Leila Montgomery

$1,250.00

ARTWORK ID: 1006

CATEGORY: Emerging Young Artist (aged 16 to 25 years)

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My artwork, "Where's Mum?" is a comedic take of my childhood in the Pilbara region. Inspired by my outgoing mum, who would spend many nerve-rackingly long hours painting or strolling through bushlands, beaches, and mudflats. My brother, Dad and I left wondering her whereabouts.

The aerial perspective offers a broad, expansive view of Millstream's bushland, with rolling hills, winding train tracks, and sparse scrubland. The winter months add a certain crispness to the scenery, with saturated earth tones and soft contrasts that reflect the changing season. The view itself, captured during a paragliding excursion by my dad, shares a sense of our freedom in the years lived in the Pilbara embodying a deep connection to the landscape that goes beyond a mere geographical scenery. The elevated vantage point also mirrors my perspective, having moved to Perth from the Pilbara, I now see the landscape through the lens of time and memory.

MEDIUM: Oil on canvas

ARTWORK DIMENSIONS (width x height): 970mm x 660mm

WEIGHT (approx): 4kg

ARTIST LOCATION: RIVERTON, WA
