<image:caption>5013, "This rumble tumble land I love....", Anita Phillips $6,200.00 AWARD WINNER: Best Overall SPONSORED BY: City of Karratha JUDGES’ NOTES: We were unanimous in selecting this striking artwork. Accurately depicting the Pilbara landscape and beautifully creating the sense of place as it comes to life on the canvas, the skilful use of expressive brush strokes in conjunction with a palette that is so unique to this land. ARTWORK ID: 5013 CATEGORY: Pilbara Landscape ARTIST STATEMENT: This landscape is one of cragged horizons, sharp vegetation that bites, and sun-seared rocks that crunch underfoot. The heat is relentless, the flies persistent, and the distances vast-but the Pilbara is part of me. I return again and again to experience its raw, remote beauty. It is a place of ancient time, a place to breathe, to find solitude, and to gain perspective in my busy world. It is also the birthplace of my children and as such, has deep connections for my family. In this work, I used cold wax and a limited palette to capture the rugged feel of the Pilbara. Layers of colour were built up, then scratched and carved back, creating an emotional and active response to terrain. I wanted this work to evoke the landscape for others to share -the spinifex, the scale of these hills, the tumbling trees that defy conditions and the timelessness of this place. <image:caption>2040, Where's Wallaby? $2,400.00 Sold Out AWARD WINNER: North West Flora and Fauna SPONSORED BY: City of Karratha JUDGES’ NOTES: Looking into this painting of a Pilbara rock face, your eyes travel around the painting to reveal Rock Wallabies, artistically blended to become a part of the rock face. ARTWORK ID: 2040 CATEGORY: North West Flora and Fauna ARTIST STATEMENT: In 'Where's Wallaby?', I explore the tension between concealment and discovery, blending natural textures and colour with a game of hide and seek. Inspired by the earthy tones and layered erosion of rock faces, the painting moves between realism and abstraction. The fractured surface invites viewers to slow down, examine the details, and engage in an active search-a visual meditation that mimics the camouflage strategies and the experience of finding the black-footed wallaby in its ancient home. At a distance, the composition appears to be an abstract landscape or a detailed study of geological formations. However, hidden within the intricate cracks and mineral hues are these north-west natives -blending in with their environment, rewarding patience with revelation. This painting is as much about what is visible as what is overlooked. In an age of instant gratification and fleeting attention, Where's Wallaby? serves as an invitation to pause, to find and notice the little things. <image:caption>CATEGORY WINNER: BEST OVERALL Sponsored by City of Karratha Artwork ID: 5055 Artist Name: Allery Sandy Artwork Title: Dry River Bed Burnt Country $20,000 prize JUDGES’ COMMENTS: This sophisticated work is deeply evocative. The exquisite materiality of this piece elicits a rich association to land, movement and the inevitability of change. The tacit use of materials results in a landscape of pattern and possibility. ARTWORK ID: 5055 CATEGORY: Pilbara Landscape ARTIST STATEMENT: This is my Country after the fire. In the early years living out on country our ancestors walked freely from one place to another, always visiting families nearby. They knew where to go and never lost direction or place. In the season of rain and cyclones they would find shelter in the caves or build shelter from the spinifex just like a humby (baru maya). As we continue our journey there are caves that we see but never enter because of our culture and respect not to enter or go anywhere near. Once our country was so rugged hills and valleys with hidden pools lay far away. Caves were used for shelter during cyclones and big rains and still lay untouched by those who walked the land. Just left are the stories and memories that we tell our children. The linear vertical marks shows the passage and intensity of light through the gorges. A sensitive abstraction with a well resolved sense of place. ARTWORK ID: 5040 CATEGORY: Pilbara Landscape ARTIST STATEMENT: I am drawn towards scenes with high contrast, bright sunlight next to deep shadows. Python Pool resonated with me for this reason, the changing shadows throughout the day altering the dramatic rocks, and allowing slithers of light to illuminate certain features. Then the soft chalky green of the water calms the hard edges of the stone, and ties the whole composition together. I painted this scene firstly, with acrylics, then went over it with oil pastels , using sharp vertical strokes, which I felt suited the geological features. There's strong evidence of technique, and considered observation. The subtle but varied hue work well under the linear overlay of white lines to bring out the chaotic nature of a place that also has a peaceful meditative quality. ARTWORK ID: 3017 CATEGORY: Open Theme ARTIST STATEMENT: The humble yet grand Marri lives and works and grows literally in my backyard just like me. I have watched these babies grow from seed over 35 years. Together we shine in the light, breathe the air and weather the storms and watch the seasons change. We provide shelter when needed if we can, and are sensitive to changes to our environment. We are strong and weak at the same time. Once you share your home, you become family. This beautiful work is sensitively rendered and a highly nuanced expression invites the viewer into the mind of the subject and elicits a sense of empathy. An intimate and enduring portrait. ARTWORK ID: 6007 CATEGORY: Portraits ARTIST STATEMENT: This is a portrait of my partner Rachael. This painting depicts the moment when we received the first significant rainfall in our hometown of Margaret River for over six months. The climate in the South West of Western Australia has been recorded as becoming drier for a number of years now but the past year has been one of the worst on record. Dams have been drying up, paddocks becoming barren, trees dying and water tanks have emptied. This image records the moment of relief a lot of the community felt down here when that first significant rain came. There is still a long way to go to fill dams and water tanks up but it's a start! The hues and patterns used are striking but complementary, while the overall work hints at a comment on colonialism. A fresh voice dealing with a subject matter that invites political discussion. ARTWORK ID: 4010 CATEGORY: Painting by Pilbara Indigenous Artist ARTIST STATEMENT: This work portrays an area known to the arst, painted here from memory. During the pujiman (tradional, desert dwelling) era one's survival depended on their inmate knowledge of the locaon of resources; thus physical elements of Country, such as sources of kapi (water), tali (sandhills), and different variees of warta (trees, vegetaon) were carefully observed and remembered. Today, this relaonship with Country remains equally strong, despite the movement of Martu out of the desert and into remote Aboriginal communies, towns and cies. Also visible may be traces of life cycles based around kalyu (rain, water) and waru (fire). A thousands of year old pracce, fire burning connues to be carried out as both an aid for hunng and a means of land management today. As the Martu travelled and hunted they would burn tracts of land, ensuring plant and animal biodiversity and reducing the risk of unmanageable, spontaneous bush fires. The patchwork nature of regrowth is visible in many landscape works, with each of the five disncve phases of fire burning visually described with respect to the cycle of burning and regrowth. Finally, metaphysical informaon relang to a locaon may also be recorded; Jukurrpa (Dreaming) narraves chronicle the creaon of physical landmarks, and can be referenced through depicons of ceremonial sites, songlines, and markers le in the land. Martumili Arsts was established in late 2006 and supports Martu arsts in Kunawarritji, Punmu, Parnngurr, Jigalong, Warralong, Irrungadji (Nullagine) and Parnpajinya (Newman). Many Martu arsts have close relaonships with established arsts amongst Yulparija, Kukatja and other Western Desert peoples and are now gaining recognion in their own right for their diverse, energec and unmediated painng styles. Their works reflect the dramac geography and scale of their homelands in the Great Sandy Desert and Rudall River regions of Western Australia. Martumili Artsts represents speakers of Manyjilyjarra, Warnman, Kartujarra, Pujarra and Martu Wangka languages, many of whom experienced first contact with Europeans in the 1960s. The arsts include painters, working in acrylics and oils, as well as weavers coiling baskets and sculptors working in wood, grass and wool. The substrate has become an integral part of the work and the plethora of iconography are well resolved. The combination of materials creates a sense of depth giving a commentary on the historical use of the land. 'July '85' incorporates evocative objects and materials found directly within the landscape, along with interpretations of my dad's vintage maps. After the rain – Karijini NP showcases the elegant and brutal landscape. The torn paper speaks back to the landscape and emphasizes the rough edge with the raised fraying of material. A lot of deliberation was clearly taken with the work. Richness of the texture mixes well with the richness of the colours. <image:caption>Cossack Artist in Residence Week 2 - Making connections with people, making connections with Ngarluma country. WIP Mangroves Oil on Board I have spent a lot of time so far observing taking photos and absorbing all that’s going on during my time here. Painting isn’t the focus yet. There are so many people here visiting the Cossack Art Awards, I’ve been making connections with people. The project that I’m aiming to achieve I think will have a lot to do with mangroves being the environmental life-force of this island. But we will see, I’m still trying to work it out. https://www.instagram.com/p/CgQ8rXUPWZa</image:caption>
